Core FTP Lite

By request, I'm providing a brief intro to the free Core FTP Lite program. This will get you familiar with the settings to set up your account in the software and upload or download files from your website. I STRONGLY encourage you to read the help files for further information and quirks.

You will need to download the program from the official site. You will need to install the program.

You will also need your login info from your webhost. This includes the userid, password, ftp IP/url/site address, and any special instructions.

  1. Start CoreFTP Lite.
  2. You should see the Site Manager window appear.

you are not seeing the program's Site Manager Window.

  3. At this point, Change "New Site" to whatever nickname you'll remember within this program. The Site Manager can remember quite a few different sites for you. This is very handy when you have various free websites out there.
  4. Add your host IP/URL. It could look like either "ftp.yoursitenamehere.com" or "123.45.678.910" .
  5. Add your user id your webhost provided and the password as well. You can add the "Remote Start Folder" and "abs" checked information (red areas) later if you need to return to the same area to upload your stuff every time.
  6. Press the "Connect" button. That should magically connect you to your website and you should see something similar to the following image.

you are not seeing the program's main window

  7. I don't show the program connected in my screen shots. Easier to explain things without worrying about connections.
  8. The left window on your screen (yellow in my image) shows your computer with the files and folders. The right (pink) window shows the remote host otherwise known as your web server where you'll upload your files. The bottom (blue) shows the progress of transfers and some details about them.
  9. Now, we'll really look at all those buttons in the left and right windows.

you are not seeing the labelled Remote Window

    • 1 SEARCH- searches the files/folders/directories.
    • 2 Keep Alive- (remote only) DRIVES/FOLDERS-(local only).
    • 3 UP Directory- moves you up one directory from a subdirectory.
    • 4 File Mask- used when searching for files.
    • 5 Refresh- just like the reload/refresh button on your browser.
    • 6 Site Manager- use this to choose the place you connect to.
    • 7 Quick Connect-just ignore this till you read the help files.
    • 8 Reconnect- reconnect to your host server.
    • 9 Disconnect- hangup with server.
    • 10 Break- does just what it says.
    • 11 Download - button which controls your download. [Note the upload button points opposite direction on the left side.]
    • 12 Selected Directories/URLs- shows you where on your site or computer you are and what you have selected.
    • 13 Directory Tree - not reccommended for use in remote window. You can get lost very easily. Great for local window.
    • 14 Filename- button which can sort your files by name.
    • 15 Size- button which can sort your files so they appear by size.
    • 16 Date- button which can sort your files so they appear by date.
    • 17 Permissions- (remote only) shows the codes for permissions to read, write, change and delete files/directories-- IGNORE for now.
  10. Ready to upload your file(s)? Click on the file icon--not name-- to select. For multiple files, hold down CTRL key while selecting. This program can upload a folder and its contents at the same time. Just drag the file/folder/selection over to the righthand window. Other option is to just click the upload button on the far right of the left window.
  11. You should see your files appear in the bottom window as they transfer. They show up in righthand window in the directory that is showing.
  12. How to figure out links to your new tut/page: [site name is wallek.com and ya just uploaded a folder named "test" with the page inside "index.html"] So, address would be http://www.wallek.com/test/index.html or http://www.wallek.com/test/ This works because all browsers assume you have an index.htm (or index.html) file in every folder on your site. Later you upload another folder "false" to the "test" folder with a file named "iamsane.html" . http://www.wallek.com/test/false/iamsane.html
  13. Easy enough... path is your website/folder/ until you reach the folder with the filename.
  14. You really DO NOT want to place a " " in your filename---if you must, use "_" to replace the spaces in the file names and folders. Not all host computers can handle spaces in file or folder names. Mixing upper and lower case like "ThisisASillyTestName.htm" means that folks must find your page named exactly that. "ThisisASillyTestName.htm" not= "THISISASILLYTESTNAME.htm" and not= "thisisasillytestname.htm".
  15. I hope this helps you get started with your web pages.
